PSPGo Overlooked Features
There are many reasons the PSPGo is priced higher than the 3000 and earlier models. The one issue people seem to be stuck on is the idea of physical media, but this is in my opinion a negative when it comes to portable/handheld devices and gaming. When you’re on the GO you don’t want to carry a ton of stuff with you so even if you’re a PSP-3000 and earlier user it’s time to get a memory stick 8GB or larger and start downloading your games. I would love to hear some of the arguments against this in the comments section because it’s something every portable gamer should be embracing and I would love to know why many are choosing not to.
$50 dollars more gets you a couple of options that you just don’t get with the PSP-3000 and earlier.
1. Smaller Form Factor (Big when traveling or taking games on the go)
2. 16GB of storage off the bat, and upgradable to 32GB or 48GB (purchasing an additional 16GB or 32GB memory Stick)
3. Playing your PSP on your TV with a PS3 controller, no wires necessary.
4. Connecting a Bluetooth headset for Skype and online gaming ( No official Sony device yet but any bluetooth headset can be used.
5. The ability to pause and save your game state and access all of the other functions of PSP Music, VIdeo, Pictures, PSN Store etc.. (Important to note that not even the PS3 can do this!)
All in all the only drawbacks I can see are the loss of being able to trade in games and having a disc to hold in your hand.

I wonder what technical limitations stops the 3000 (or other model, or even PS3) from putting games on hold… if any? I’m assuming it’s merely a choice Sony made to give the Go something the others wouldn’t have; it being technically possible with the other hardware.
I definitely think it’s a corp decision as homebrew had these options on preivous models, but I think it’s because Sony is concerned about writing information to the Previous models because they’ve been hacked. It’s definitely possible but not through the legal route.
Very good point about digital distribution: I prefer my MP3 player to my portable CD player.
However I see one drawback of not having the disk: it is about sharing the game within the family. We have multiple PSP in the family and having to by the game for each PSP even if you don’t want to do multi-player sessions is a pity. Is it possible to copy games from one console to another? I guess not !
I am wondering also if the new position of buttons is not a loss in ergonomic. Seems to me as for the Game Boy Advance when it became SP. I preferred the ergonomic of the first Advance. And what about the L and R buttons?
First on the game sharing, any PSP game you download can be put on upto 5 PSPs which means it’s 5 times more accessible than UMD since you would need to purchase 5 UMDs to play with your family. If you download Killzone Liberation you can put it on 5 PSPs as long as they download it using the same account. So download away
as for the button layout it actually feels more natural but I think you need to get your hands on it first becaue I felt the same way when I first saw it.
Doesn’t that also mean that if something were to wipe your GO, you’d only have 4 back up downloads to replace it? Thats the problem with the digital age, its ridiculously easy to duplicate things for almost no cost.
Hozbog brings up a good point that people like MP3 players more than cd players because of mass storage, no moving parts or analog errors, but at least with an mp3 player you can duplicate any lost data from a computer, where as with psp’s you can only do this when hacking.
Maybe what they need is a way to return your UMD games and movies to get a download of them in return.
My only gripe is that the white go is all….sparkly…sup with that man??
doesn’t show fingerprints that’s my justification and it looks bad ass in public
My major problem with the GO is that it has no way to reward you for having the earlier models. Jeez, they even rewarded you in Europe by allowing you get three downloadable games out of the 17 other games offered for free on PSN (one of the 17 games included Resistance Retribution!) I don’t see why SCEA couldn’t have done the same thing.
I don’t see the point of paying another 250 dollars for a system that is literally a downgrade from the 3000, and doesn’t even reward you or create a system to at least give you back something in return for owning a previous system with UMDs.
I don’t hate the PSP Go (I actually like the idea) but I don’t see why SCEA couldn’t have done the task that SCEE did. It just shows a lack of consumer respect, and total arrogance by thinking that people will blindly by a system that in the end gives you less bang for your buck.
I agree that the SCEE purchase plan is definitely better than the SCEA plan but the PSPGo is a significant upgrade in terms of hardware and functionality over the 3000. UMD is a solid platform for PSP but having the games on the memory stick is a much better option in terms or portable gaming.
I also don’t think it’s standard for any company to expect to allow people to get a pass on their old hardware as much as I would LOVE the option it’s not something that’s guaranteed. It would have done them a lot of good to have some option but I think they opted to just put this as a new customer product and existing psp owners would have to make the decision on their own. I would also assume they are probably burnt by the number of people who’ve pirated games using the old PSP, which greatly outnumbers those loyal customers.
All bad launch decisions aside, you need to look at the hardware for what it is and what it does and remember it’s $50 bucks more, how much is a 16GB memory card for and without the resume game feature can you really multitask with the PSP-3000 and earlier.
All valid points of concern but as far back as I can remember the only console that rewarded earlier adopters was the PS2 with full backwards compatibilty and the PS3 launch units with backwards compatiblity but other than that what console rewarded users for having an old model?
Even when the DS Lite and the DSi came out there were no game trade ups for losing the GB slot, you just made the choice and no one thought the different.
Just because other companies don’t bring backwards compatibility in their newer products (in this case, a rewards program) does not mean it’s right. Especially when SCEE is making a program that is reasonable to the customers. I agree with you that there is a lot of piracy out there for the psp, but that doesn’t that shouldn’t count for their final decision of implementing a Rewards program or not.
A rewards program is by no means a full backwards compatibility feature. Not even close. It’s just a way to credit the fact that the customers bought their earlier systems. Unfortunately, I think SCEA is going to learn that the hard way.
Like I mentioned above, I think the Go is a great idea. The heavy price tag though (it should be noted that the Ipod touch is 50$ less) is going to steer a lot of costumers away. No doubt though, the go has superior hardware compared to the 3000. Enjoy your PSP Go, while I enjoy my “Still supported” 3000
.
Like I said all good points but no consumer is entiltled to be rewarded for being a customer it’s not something that should be expected, it would be a nice bonus though. I just think that people are expecting something that they really shouldn’t, everyone likes handouts or incentives but that’s not a something that is a negative to the machine.
As for the Ipod touch yeah dropping the price does make it a lot more competitive but not if you’re looking for a gaming system. If you’re looking for a cool piece of tech yes but the iphone/ipod are not “gaming systems” the games they offer are not on the same level.
My proof of the Europe Rewards program: http://www.sonyinsider.com/2009/09/25/internet-uproar-over-sony-psp-go-lack-of-umd-to-psp-conversion-for-usa/
It looks “girly” in public is more like it LoL…I will say, I LOVE the ergonomics. Im definitely getting one, but I may switch off to the flat black color instead of white. I like the DS3 you got for yours, Omni.
OOooo…Josh, are you from Europe?? Didnt/ dont know. But the Go isnt ‘heavily’ priced. USD, 250 dollars ain’t too bad. 16 gigs, wireless functionality and…AND you can use your cell phone as a wireless router…come on, this machine is the shizzle!! Add the ever growing library to the list and you have a fully functional wi-fi BEAST. Just keep your 1/ 2/ 3000 too for UMD support.
I’m not from Europe
, just saw the information on ign. Anyways, I have nothing against the psp and the great games that are coming. After all, I use my psp regularly.
@ Omnilaw, I gues we can agree to disagree
agreed
Just to be controversial…………I FLAT OUT DISAGREE!
agreed
hahahha…now children
So, Omni, did you settle for the white or black (actually not being sure if the photos are your own personal gear)?? If so, what made you change your mind?? If the gear is yours, it defo looks GOOOOOD, man
Not to crazy about the looks… I still don’t find the “sexiness” about it
