The Helcast Episode 50 – It’s Raining

This week we have a slightly different format for the Helcast. Since the show was recorded at two different times, we split into two different takes.
From Heavy Rain to Dante’s Inferno we give our views on these games and what’s to come for this month. Tune in!

Heavy Rain is a different beast, I’ll give it that. Really, at the end of it all, it’s really hard to pigeon hole into a description that you would use to let someone know about the game or at least one that would do it justice. The experience they’ve created seems to go beyond the method of input or the conventional mindset of what makes a game – a game.
I did have issues with some things… like the feeling of being stunted (with choices) when in an area. Say in the first part of the game inside ethan’s nice looking house, while there are a number of things to interact with… I just wanted more choice, even if it didn’t exactly make for a smooth story line. Example, I would of gotten a kick out of being able to cruise the house in just my underwear and get a “WTF?” look from the wife when she got home, instead of being forced to get dressed. Or, perhaps decide to leave the jug of juice on the floor instead of putting it back in the refrigerator. You know? Just little things like that, which could of been fleshed out more to make the experience just that much more unique for each person.
I also have issues with some of the voice work. With a game that’s so heavy on story, feeling a lack of emotion or power in a voice where needed… would really Jar me from the experience. Conversations for the most part are done in a way in which this isn’t a problem… but when a strong emotion or power in a voice is needed… like in the Mall scene (again with ethan)… there just didn’t seem to be that forcefulness and sense of urgency in his voice, instead you’re wondering around spitting out his lines… like they were being read carelessly off of the sheet of paper that the voice actor had in front of him.
Those aside, I’m still really enjoying the game. The whole feel of it is something I rather enjoy. Had a question for you guys tho. Did you at any point in the game press a quick time button flash which you only pressed because it flashed up quickly and you instinctively thought you had to? I’m just so use to QTEs in games being something I HAVE to press, without even thinking about it that… I got to a particular scene where I just went and snapped the button that flashed on screen and … did something I REALLY didn’t want or mean to do. Any issues with that?
Yay, GoW3 soon
Can anyone say LONGEST COMMENT EVER SEEN ON KILLZONE UNIT!
All joking aside though Hush, You make a few valid points, such as the mall scene when calling out for Shaun, the repetitiveness of calling out for him and the lack of desperation if you will in Ethan’s voice leaves a little bit to be desired. However the game as a whole is unlike ANYTHING ever seen on any platform, and therefore find it easy to ignore it.
As a parent myself I found the whole experience really moving and emotional. It had a real impact on the decisions I made, as I found myself constantly asking myself if this was my child WHAT WOULD I DO.
In closing…………..OUTSTANDING GAME!
Clinton, listening to the podcast a second time, I cannot believe that you have only just unlocked the spot and mark ability on Killzone 2! As a result I’m requesting all killzone unit members to hop into Killzone this weekend. Saturday night is a good night for me. WHO’S IN!
Ha,
Oh, I totally agree that such problems can be overlooked for the experience. But it doesn’t hide the fact that they’re still present. Just kinda wish I didn’t notice them so.
